Backed by a team of leading experts, Kristen L. Skogrand pooled together the information you deserve in order to increase your awareness and self-protection ability. Once completed, make this resource part of your personal security arsenal; at home, at work, or while you’re traveling. Kristen heeded a loud call to action even before the 9/11 terror attacks. He provides true-to-life perspectives allowing you personal safety preparedness rooted in reality. The fact that airlines and airline representatives want to use his firsthand encounter with air rage as part of improved crewmember training speaks for itself. Personal safety instructors on several continents also use Kristen’s input and story while training crewmembers and everyday people for safer travel and safer living. Imagine for a second that an experienced Purser and his staff receive at least three separate warnings from sober travelers about potential violence by an unruly passenger at 35,000 feet. Witnesses and the threatened passenger even warn the Purser a fourth time, now of the fact that the belligerent individual literally has PROMISED to injure one of his co-passengers, and threatened to "finish off" another. Next, imagine the Purser arriving the scene of the violence about to erupt, instructing the THREATENED individual to strap himself in within punching range of the one who had PROMISED to injure him. Then he swiftly leaves the scene... This in spite of the threatened passenger’s plea for re-seating and added protection due to the threats. Other passengers echoed the same plea... Next, envision the assailant carrying out his violent promise merely 30 seconds after the Purser and another crewmember leave their passengers to handle the dangerous situation on their own. The drunken and aggressive man jumps up in his seat in front of the threatened individual. He causes him permanent injuries by performing a brutal assault. Shortly thereafter, the Purser displays his handcuffs to multiple passengers; but refuses to use them - although capable manpower on board was plentiful. The most disturbing fact? He was utterly incapable of implementing any other types of diffusion or restraints as well. The "softer" kinds that at least would keep the assailant in his seat... away from the now-injured co-passenger, other families, and even kids and infants. Then envision the violent thug charge at the injured passenger on two additional occasions. All this while male airline representatives literally "hid" from the violent actions, rather than offering at least minimal protection. According to witnesses, the crew saw the thug continue to chase after the injured one, and further threatening other travelers. Crewmembers even apologized to the victim after the second charge, and promised that it would certainly NOT happen again. It did! They left the incapacitated victim completely on his own, wide open for the additional injuries and trauma he sustained during this senseless violation of their passenger’s right to protection and support. This all happened onboard the flight from the U.S. to Europe on July 4, 2001. Fact or fiction… Mark Twain once said, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as much as you want.” Facts about incidents of violence and terror in the air offer distasteful images. Studying them in order to learn is imperative anyway. Other people’s misadventures of the past can become your best safety shield for the future. But only if you decide to extract the insights they offer. Remember, this insight can protect you; and it usually came at a very high price paid by others. Sometimes even the highest price of all; their very lives… Some individuals and companies in the aviation industry have secondary motives for distorting facts or brushing distasteful truths under the carpet. Profit demands and public relations are the most common reasons why they do so. Don’t fall for these tactics. Kristen has studied them firsthand. He remains in complete awe of how far some companies are willing to go in compromising on honesty and integrity in order not to be “bothered by facts”. This environment of concealment ultimately hurts the industry itself. Although the attacks on Kristen were foreseeable and forewarned, he initially sustained one very brutal assault. Then, he endured two additional violent charges aimed at him while he lay defenseless due to the injuries from the first attack. The senseless mutilation Kristen experienced happened in plain view of a host of more or less paralyzed male airline representatives incapable of intervening action. Kristen was consequently attacked on three separate occasions – on the same flight! He sustained injuries that dramatically altered his life, and still do. Due to the lack of proper intervention and restraint of the belligerent air rager and the threat he posed to the flight, the Captain finally decided to divert to a U.S. airport. Emergency personnel rushed Kristen to the hospital, while Police took the perpetrator to jail. Just 3 weeks before 9/11, he received a stunningly mild sentence after pleading guilty to two felony counts. According to an FAA spokesperson, "If this had occured after 9/11, the sentence would probably have been much stiffer." The story doesn't end here, though... The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has since thoroughly investigated the matter. Their investigation consolidates the facts and claims made by Kristen and independent witnesses. The FAA therefore imposed a USD 35,000 Civil Penalty on the cowardice assailant. This is among the stiffest monetary penalties ever imposed on an unruly passenger, if not the stiffest. Today, the assailant, residing in California, attempts to evade payment of the penalty by hiding his whereabouts… Unfortunately, airline representatives displayed an almost surprising amount of post-event dishonesty and denial of facts, all documented in writing and by 3rd-party witnesses combined. Kristen chose not to embark on a vengeful path, however. Instead, he launched a powerful global quest for increased passenger, crewmember, and pilot protection. He masterfully combines in-depth safety knowledge and scientific reasoning with genuine empathy; and passion you can feel. An excellent team of leading experts backed Kristen's efforts. Once his health condition allows, he'll complete his evolving study project. Packed with real-life stories of courage under fire and strength and renewal after trauma and loss, his research will enlighten and empower you toward safer travel, peace of mind; and fearless living! His research findings were tentatively scheduled for release in 2005. Since the date relies on his continued recovery, the time of the release still remains uncertain. (The author may decide to introduce an initial version in eBook format.) Kristen repeatedly forewarned the crew that the unruly passenger on the flight in question posed violent danger, at no prevail. He also pointed out that the passenger doubled up on the alcohol the crewmembers served him, with Whiskey he had brought onboard himself. Kristen even pointed out exactly where the perpetrator hid his liquor, asked the crew to stop serving him alcohol, and pleaded with them to immediately cease the Whiskey bottle. This did not happen in time… Instead, passengers witnessed the so-called Tax Free Syndrome playing out in full force; greatly fueled by alcohol served from the regular in-flight resources available. Although intensely begged for, the Purser and his crew did not offer any added protection at all once the unruly passenger had carried out his initial assault. After Kristen lay down with ice on his beat-up face, the crew again remained passive spectators as the assailant charged at him on two additional occasions. This happened when Kristen was merely conscious, nearly blinded, and with severely restricted ability to move. Ultimately, the unruly passenger chased him around in the passenger cabin "like an injured animal" (as one newspaper put it). Diverted landing… Before the diverted landing nearly 2 hours later, the perpetrator had also threatened other families with children. One 10-year old girl, forced to remain within 6-7 feet of the assailant although he had threatened to injure her father, got physically ill from the violent scenario unfolding next to her. Meanwhile, the violent subject were free to roam the passenger cabin without any effective restraints being used. The 10-year old remained traumatized for several months thereafter… Did the crew heed the call to move the innocent little girl and her parents to the wide-open business class for increased safety? Not on this flight! Airline representatives claimed so in post-incident correspondence, trying to portray picture-perfect and swift handling by their failing crew. This is but one of several incorrect claims the airline has made in order to evade their ultimate responsibility. Turning this complete breakdown in procedures and passenger protection into a “responsible act” appears futile. It is also re-traumatizing to the victim(s). Injury and trauma… The attacks on Skogrand resulted in…
Handled resolutely and in accordance with commonly accepted guidelines, all of the above could most likely have been prevented. And yet, Kristen stated the following after his unexpected encounter with rage, violence and trauma in the skies as he attempted to carry out a Good Samaritan Act by protecting gravely threatened co-passengers: “I will turn my misadventure into power-lessons for other people’s future protection and optimal safety. There is power and healing in sharing and caring. In spite of permanent injuries and severe trauma, I will reach out positively, rather than digging into negative emotions and letting these eclipse the opportunity to touch someone in a way that truly matters. As for the involved airline, I am not out to get even; simply to get justice for myself and my family.” Study Project: SAFE FLIER AFTER SEPTEMBER 11 How to Feel Safer, Get Safer, and Stay Safer in an Environment Still Vulnerable to Rage and Terror. ISBN 0-9741539-8-2 (Release to be announced later - The author may initially introduce an eBook version of his findings.) With frequent use of Speech-Recognition Software, and empowered by support from friends, associates and some of the best aviation safety experts on this planet, Kristen stubbornly committed himself to turning his misadventure into power-lessons for your future safety and wellbeing. Or as he puts it; "Nothing beats real-life accounts. They tend to result in proportionately real-life lessons and solutions you can easily understand and apply for your own good."
You want optimal safety whether you fly as a passenger, crewmember, or pilot. You also want to be sure that a reliable shield of protection embraces your spouse, children, loved ones, friends and colleagues next time they board a commercial flight.
For economic and other reasons, government agencies, airlines and security firms have since had various motivations for biased conclusions as to what really led up to the disaster. The post-9/11 blame game actually started just hours after this horrific day of terror and havoc commenced; and it's not over yet. This lead Kristen to make a series of in-depth inquiries. During the process, he interacted with people who lost their loved ones on some of the hijacked aircraft on 9/11. He also appeared with them on a national television show in the U.S. This interaction touched him deeply. With the 9/11 Commission's Report recently out, even more light has been shed on some of the key subject matters Kristen and his global team researched. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND LIKELY DEBATE TRIGGERS:
THEORY, ASSUMPTIONS AND HINDSIGHT: Do you want to rank among the best protected and least vulnerable fliers in the world? Once completed, Kristen will dedicate "Safe Flier After September 11" to you and every other passenger, crewmember and flight-deck professional with the same desire. His research illuminates real-life methods critical to your personal safety. Don't go back in the air without it! We are currently flooded with aviation related safety theory and risk assumptions. Unless you can convert this information into a set of tenets, attitudes and self-protection methods you can apply in real life, the theory itself becomes mere mumbo-jumbo that serves hindsight purposes at best. Kristen firmly upholds that hindsight and delayed responses to imminent threats represent "the art of keeping up with yesterday", rather than preparing for optimal safety today. Your best option is to enamor yourself with a different arsenal of protective know-how, skills, and tools that can be confidently put to use when needed the most. These skills and tools need to conform with the new aviation safety procedures that prevail after 9/11. Kristen's research initiatives will thoughtfully display loopholes yet not covered under the new Aviation Security Act, and build on the aviation safety tenet applicable to passengers and crewmembers alike: Ask for what you want, or accept what you get! SAFE FLIER analyses the best and most practical methods for effective prevention, and ways to increase your safety before you encounter the unthinkable. When it comes to your well-being and protection, theory and mere assumptions don't suffice. Unless you fuse safety theory with practical application you can use in an instant's notice, the bad guys are likely to win, with you and others vulnerable to injury, trauma and paralyzing fear. Amidst political maneuvering, the post-9/11 blame-game, alarming airport security breaches, and (even) continued incidents of air rage and terror threats; who and what are you to believe? How can you step up to the plate and take renewed charge of your own safety? According to Skogrand: 'Unless you become a conscious and insightful safety enhancement "agent" yourself, whether as a passenger or a crewmember, commercial aviation will never return to the safety level airlines need, and passengers deserve.' SAFETY KNOWLEDGE, SCIENTIFIC REASONING AND PASSION: Victims who lost their loved ones when the planes hit the World Trade Center; people involved in restraining Richard Reid (the Shoebomber) on AA Flight 63; previous air marshals and air marshal trainers; brave flight attendants and pilots; legal and medical professionals; plus the world's foremost aviation safety and self-protection experts supported Kristen's quest for truth and robust solutions. They are set to appear in his research findings, and collectively empowered him on his mission: To provide prevention and survivability techniques that will calm uncertainties and transfer insight, skills, and tools that grant you optimal safety preparedness at all times. Once available, "Safe Flier After September 11" will reveal secrets you need to know about before you board your next flight. Written by a counselor and mediator, the study actually goes way beyond revelations that might shock you, and delivery of information that will protect your health, wellbeing and peace of mind. It is also a life-enhancing and motivational handshake that can help you maintain your quest for life and adventure in spite of the serious times of rage, anxiety and terror our society must come to grips with. Skogrand's advice, experience and encouraging blueprints in the areas of coping and healing during tough times are power-lessons you simply don't want to miss. PS!
